President Mohamed Bazoum, democratically elected leader of Niger, faces worsening conditions under house arrest since the July 26 military coup. Diminished food supplies and electricity highlight the family's dire circumstances.

"Spoke to Nigerien President Bazoum to express our continued efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the current constitutional crisis," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in an Aug. 8 post on X, formerly known as Twitter. "The United States reiterates our call for the immediate release of him and his family."

According to spokesperson Matthew Miller, Blinken engaged in a conversation with Bazoum, during which they discussed the recent visit of Acting Deputy Secretary Nuland to Niamey, an Aug. 9 State Department release reported. The U.S. conveyed its unwavering support for a solution that reinstates democratic rule and constitutional order in Niger. The safety and security of Bazoum and his family were highlighted as paramount by Blinken.

Bazoum, who was democratically elected as Niger's leader, has been held under house arrest at the presidential palace since the military coup took place July 26. The advisor to the deposed president reported concerning living conditions for the family, including a lack of electricity and dwindling food supplies, according to AP News.

With only rice and canned goods remaining, the situation has escalated into a dire state for the Bazoum family. According to AP News, the advisor, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, affirmed Bazoum remains in good health and is resolute in not resigning from his position.

The international community's attention remains focused on Niger as it navigates through this constitutional crisis, according to The Guardian. The call for a peaceful resolution has been echoed by various nations and organizations, all advocating for the restoration of democratic governance and the safeguarding of the rule of law.
