Huang: 'NVIDIA is putting our full force behind the advancement and adoption of OpenUSD'

NVIDIA recently revealed a comprehensive initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD). OpenUSD is a 3D framework for creating virtual worlds and enhancing industrial digitalization, according to an Aug. 8 NVIDIA release.

“Just as HTML ignited a major computing revolution of the 2D internet, OpenUSD will spark the era of collaborative 3D and industrial digitalization,” founder and CEO of NVIDIA Jensen Huang said in the release. “NVIDIA is putting our full force behind the advancement and adoption of OpenUSD through our development of NVIDIA Omniverse and generative AI.”

NVIDIA's efforts include the development of new technologies, cloud APIs and programs like ChatUSD and RunUSD, alongside the co-founding of the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) with industry leaders Pixar, Adobe, Apple and Autodesk, all aimed at advancing collaborative 3D applications, the release reported.

NVIDIA unveiled four new Omniverse Cloud APIs, which were created by the company allowing developers to deploy and implement OpenUSD pipelines and apps more easily, the release said. ChatUSD is a large language model (LLM) co-pilot for developers that can produce Python-USD code scripts or respond to questions on USD understanding.

NVIDIA's Python-USD code snippets and USD utilities are used to fine-tune ChatUSD. By comparing the provided files' compatibility with the latest OpenUSD releases and producing renderings using Omniverse Cloud, the cloud API RunUSD converts OpenUSD files into completely path-traced rendered pictures, according to the release.

Developers in the NVIDIA OpenUSD Developer Program can presently access a demo of the API, the release said. Fast semantic search via enormous databases of untagged assets is made possible by DeepSearch, an LLM agent.

A one-click service called USD-GDN Publisher enables businesses and software developers to stream in real time to web browsers and mobile devices as well as publish high-fidelity, OpenUSD-based experiences to the Omniverse Cloud Graphics Delivery Network (GDN) from an Omniverse-based application called USD Composer, according to the release.

To better connect the animation and cinema industries, OpenUSD was developed. Different demands are placed on the 3D framework by industrial applications such as constructing physically accurate real-time digital twins of factories, interoperable manufacturing design pipelines or training and verifying autonomous cars, the release said.

NVIDIA is developing NVIDIA Omniverse, the OpenUSD-native software platform for developing applications, as well as technologies like geospatial data models, metrics assembly and simulation-ready, or SimReady, specifications for OpenUSD, to support these extremely complex industrial and perception AI workloads, the release reported.

Users can create simulations and computations for accurate digital twins of industries, warehouses, cities and even Earth, using geospatial data models for OpenUSD. It takes into account the curvature of the planet to make sure the simulations are physically correct for large-scale projects, according to the release.
