TPPF director: 'I look forward to working with the Legislature to empower parents and teachers in the upcoming special session'

The Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) praised the release of key educational reforms focusing on promoting literacy, improving grievance processes, enhancing school choice, funding teacher programs and addressing classroom discipline, according to a press release.

"I applaud Chairman Buckley, and the members of the committee, for this excellent start as we expand educational opportunities for kids across the state of Texas," Mandy Drogin, campaign director for TPPF’s Next Generation Texas campaign, said. "I look forward to working with the Legislature to empower parents and teachers in the upcoming special session."

The Texas House Select Committee for Education Opportunity and Enrichment released its Initial Interim Report to the 88th Texas Legislature on Aug. 11, focusing on ensuring equal educational opportunity and quality education for all children in the state. The report has received strong support from the TPPF.

The press release from the TPPF outlines key recommendations for reforms that are expected to be included in the upcoming special session of the Legislature. For parents, the reforms focus on promoting early childhood literacy with clear insights into children's reading progress and resources to support them at home, implementing an efficient public school grievance process that lasts no longer than 120 days, and reforming district transfer policies to enable children to transfer without tuition charges, as well as establishing Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) to enhance education quality and freedom. For teachers, the proposed reforms include funding a Teacher Residency Program to augment the supply of high-quality teachers prepared for day one, increasing funding to raise teacher salaries, including through the Teacher Incentive Allotment, allowing for six-figure salaries for exceptional teachers, and reforming policies to enable teachers to remove students with notably problematic behavior from the classroom.

The report emphasizes the commitment to ensuring that all Texas youths, regardless of their circumstances, have equal opportunities and the freedom to access quality education. Improving outcomes for public school students while meaningfully supporting educators and educational institutions and modernizing assessment and accountability measures for Texas schools educating K-12 students.

The forthcoming special session is eagerly anticipated by education advocates and policy experts alike, as it represents a significant step toward realizing the proposed reforms. The focus on transparency, choice and support for both parents and teachers marks a coordinated effort to improve education across the state, offering promise for Texas' next generation.
