A new multi-state initiative called the Kindergarten Sturdy Bridge Learning Community has been launched by the US Department of Education (DOE) to reinvent the kindergarten experience. The program aims to transform kindergarten into a platform that addresses the diverse needs of young learners and sets them on a path to success in later school stages.
Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the importance of getting kindergarten right, as it sets the stage for a child's learning and development in elementary school and beyond. Making kindergarten a "sturdy bridge" between early years and early grades is crucial for academic excellence and creating a more equitable foundation for educational success.
The initiative recognizes the diversity in young learners' strengths and needs. It offers opportunities to meet the diverse needs of children, including those with developmental delays, disabilities, and different linguistic strengths. The program also aims to address physical and behavioral health needs that may otherwise go undetected and untreated, while fostering partnerships with parents and families.
To ensure a seamless transition from preschool to kindergarten and beyond, the Biden-Harris administration has proposed a preschool incentive demonstration program. This initiative seeks to increase access to high-quality preschools in both school and community-based settings for children eligible to attend Title I schools. President Biden's budget request includes a historic $500 million investment to support this endeavor.
In line with President Biden's executive order on enhancing access to high-quality care, the DOE plans to provide further guidance to districts and grantees on leveraging federal funds to increase access to high-quality preschools in high-need schools. With this multi-state initiative, the goal is to redefine the kindergarten experience and provide every child with a strong foundation for their academic journey.
