Members of Milorad Dobik's family and patronage network sanctioned by U.S. Treasury

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has designated two individuals and four entities as part of Specially Designated National (SDN) and Republika Srpska (RS) President Milorad Dodik's patronage network. Dodik, a former member of the Presidency of BiH, faces allegations that he misused his position to enrich himself and his family at the expense of the population of BiH and the country's ability to govern effectively.

Dodik has amassed a fortune through unscrupulous practices like bribery and graft, facilitated by his high-ranking government position and personal connections. His public attacks on various ethnic and religious groups in BiH and divisive ethnonationalist rhetoric only serve to further foment discord and paralyze government.

Treasury Department Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson said, "With the financial and political support of the individuals and entities designated today, Dodik has engaged in corruption that ensures his personal financial and political stability at the expense of BiH citizens living in Republika Srpska." Additionally, he stated, "We will continue to hold accountable those whose actions contribute to the degradation and undermining of institutions in BiH and the Western Balkans, as well as the undermining of the Dayton Peace Agreement."

Some in the BiH are worried that the RS is becoming more of a family company than a political organization because of the increased involvement of Dobik's son and daughter in political and business activities within the RS since 2021. Foreign investors have been wary of pouring money into the RS out of fear that it will end up in the pockets of the Dobik family rather than the government because of the widespread belief that they will be used to enrich the Dobiks personally. With her father's instruction, Dobik's daughter manages his political and commercial affairs, and she also owns other businesses that benefit greatly from RS government support.

The designations are an expansion of previous penalties and visa restrictions imposed by the United States to encourage accountability for those who aid in corrupt practices or work to undermine democratic processes and institutions. These measures are part of a larger U.S. government initiative to strengthen democratic institutions and foster a more peaceful environment in the Western Balkans.
