Gov. Abbott: 'Legislation (will) crack down on illegal border crossings'

Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, announced that the Texas Legislature passed legislation to aid in the crackdown on illegal border crossings on November 17. This move comes as part of a broader effort by the state to address the issue of border security and immigration.

"This week, the Texas Legislature passed legislation that will give Texas new tools to crack down on illegal border crossings. Texas continues to hold the line amid President Biden’s border crisis.", said Greg Abbott.

As reported in a press release from the Governor's office,
the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 4, which creates criminal penalties for illegal entry into Texas and authorizes the removal of illegal immigrants apprehended at the border. Governor Abbott said he will sign this historic legislation into law.


Furthering their commitment to strengthening border security,
Governor Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Texas National Guard are continuing to work together to secure the border; stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas; and prevent, detect, and interdict transnational criminal activity between ports of entry.

In reference to Operation Lone Star,
the multi-agency effort has led to over 484,100 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 36,600 criminal arrests, with more than 33,200 felony charges reported according to a news release from Governor's office. In an ongoing fight against fentanyl crisis, over 435 million lethal doses have been seized by Texas law enforcement during this mission.

The collaboration between Governor Abbott's administration along with DPS and National Guard,
has been pivotal in border security, stopping smuggling of drugs, weapons and human trafficking, along with preventing and detecting transnational criminal activities between ports of entry as per a statement from the governor’s office.

The media release also shared the significant progress made by Operation Lone Star,
with more than 484,100 illegal immigrant apprehensions and over 36,600 criminal arrests. It was reported that this multi-agency operation has been successful in bringing forth more than 33,200 felony charges. Texas law enforcement's battle against fentanyl crisis resulted in seizing over 435 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this mission.
