The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has unveiled a strategy to enhance the security of faith-based communities in light of ongoing threats stemming from Middle East tensions. The DHS will leverage resources within the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to bolster the security measures of religious groups.
In a DHS news release, it was stated that a set of cost-effective actions, known as Physical Security Performance Goals, have been specifically designed for faith-based organizations. These measures can be implemented to reduce risk without compromising access to facilities. The goals, which are based on Cybersecurity Performance Goals, represent another initiative by the Biden administration to support faith-based organizations amidst persistent threats.
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas affirmed the department's commitment to ensuring safety for all Americans in their expressions of faith. He said, "In this continued heightened threat environment, the Department of Homeland Security is committed to protecting every American’s right to live, express, and worship their faith freely and in safety." Mayorkas further emphasized the importance of these new resources and urged all faith-based institutions to incorporate the recommended security practices.
According to a DHA media release, religious organizations across the country are being targeted by individuals with malicious intent. The initiatives outlined by the DHS aim to establish a robust security foundation that will help houses of worship guard against threats. The ultimate goal is to tailor these plans according to the specific needs of each religious organization and community.
CISA Director Jen Easterly reiterated her agency's commitment towards enhancing protection for houses of worship while maintaining their open and welcoming environments. She said, "CISA remains fully committed to its longstanding partnership with faith-based leaders to advance the protection of houses of worship while preserving their open and welcoming environments." Easterly highlighted CISA's proven track record in aiding faith-based communities in improving physical and cyber security practices.
