Washington, D.C. — House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Energy, Climate, and Grid Security Subcommittee Chair Jeff Duncan (R-SC) have praised the passage of H.R. 1042, the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Act. The bill, which aims to end America's reliance on Russian uranium, passed the House with a bipartisan voice vote.
In a joint statement, Chair Rodgers and Chair Duncan emphasized the importance of reducing America's dependence on Russian nuclear fuel. They highlighted that currently, more than 20 percent of the fuel used by U.S. reactors is produced by Russia, giving President Putin significant leverage over America's energy security.
Chair Rodgers stated, "This has given Putin a dangerous amount of leverage over America's energy security." She further added, "H.R. 1042 will ban these fuel imports from Russia and help restore America's nuclear leadership and fuel infrastructure."
Chair Duncan echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need to prioritize American interests in the nuclear energy sector. He said, "We hope the Senate will move swiftly to pass this important legislation so it is sent to the President's desk to become law."
The bill was led by Chair Rodgers and Chair Bob Latta (R-OH) from the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. The bipartisan support in the House demonstrates the shared commitment to enhancing America's nuclear leadership and ensuring energy security.
With the passage of H.R. 1042, the United States takes a significant step towards reducing its reliance on Russian uranium and strengthening its own fuel infrastructure. The bill now awaits consideration in the Senate, where its sponsors hope for swift action to further advance America's nuclear interests.
