AFL-CIO and Microsoft are partnering to develop AI and the future of the workforce

Microsoft and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) have announced a partnership aimed at developing artificial intelligence (AI) that caters to the needs of workers. The alliance intends to ensure that workers' voices are heard during AI development and will work towards shaping an AI policy that supports them.

"This partnership reflects a recognition of the critical role workers play in the development, deployment, and regulation of AI and related technologies," AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler stated. She further expressed optimism about the collaboration with Microsoft, highlighting its potential to foster worker-centered design, workforce training, and trustworthy AI practices. Shuler also lauded Microsoft's neutrality framework and its willingness to tap into workers' expertise.

According to a press release by Microsoft, this is the first partnership between a technology company and a labor organization with a focus on AI. The collaboration aims to achieve three primary goals: sharing comprehensive information about AI technology and developmental trends with labor leaders and workers; incorporating workers' perspectives during software development; and influencing public policy in favor of frontline workers.

Microsoft has committed to offering formal learning opportunities on AI developments for labor leaders, workers, and students. These sessions are scheduled for launch in winter 2024 under the guidance of Microsoft's AI experts. In addition, Microsoft plans to collaborate with the American Federation of Teachers to explore joint opportunities for career and technical education work, aiming to prepare students for high-paying future jobs.

Microsoft developers have also created a mechanism allowing labor leaders to provide feedback on AI, thereby promoting worker-centered technology development. The AFL-CIO-Microsoft partnership will pool resources in support of policies that equip workers with essential skills and economic backing necessary for thriving in an AI-driven economy. They plan to create new content and professional learning opportunities designed to prepare workers for future demands.
