The United States Department of Commerce has announced the formation of the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC). This consortium will bring together 200 leaders from various sectors, including AI creators, industry researchers, and civil society organizations, to foster the development of safe and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI).

"The U.S. government has a significant role to play in setting the standards and developing the tools we need to mitigate the risks and harness the immense potential of artificial intelligence. President Biden directed us to pull every lever to accomplish two key goals: set safety standards and protect our innovation ecosystem. That’s precisely what the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium is set up to help us do," stated Gina Raimondo, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

According to a press release by the Department of Commerce, AISIC will operate under the auspices of the U.S. AI Safety Institute. It aims to contribute towards achieving objectives outlined in a landmark Executive Order issued by President Biden. Released on October 30, 2023 by the White House, this Executive Order pertains specifically to AI and sets new standards for its safety and security while encouraging innovation in this rapidly expanding sector. The order mandates that developers of powerful AI systems share their safety test results with the U.S. government as per requirements laid out in the Defense Production Act.

"To keep pace with AI, we have to move fast and make sure everyone – from the government to the private sector to academia – is rowing in the same direction. Thanks to President Biden's landmark Executive Order, AISIC provides a critical forum for all of us to work together to seize the promise and manage risks posed by AI," said Bruce Reed, White House Deputy Chief of Staff.
