Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) has proposed a new legislation, titled the Jalisco Cartel Neutralization Act. This bill would mandate the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to strategize and execute plans aimed at eliminating the leadership of the Jalisco Cartel. In a recent press statement, Cotton declared that these cartels pose a greater threat than any terrorist organization in history and their dismantling is an imperative.
According to this press release, Cotton's bill stipulates that the DOD must periodically report to Congress every 90 days about its efforts to dismantle the Jalisco Cartel's leadership. The press release identifies the Jalisco Cartel as one of Mexico's most brutal and dangerous cartels, responsible for instigating what it describes as the worst drug crisis in U.S. history.
Cotton was quoted in the press release saying, "Mexican drug cartels continue to kill Americans at a rate higher than any terrorist group in history. Even by the standards of drug cartels, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel is especially violent and poses a direct threat to the security of Americans in border states and beyond. It’s past time that the Biden administration develops a strategy to hold these murderers accountable."
U.S. Representative Morgan Luttrell (R-Texas) supports Cotton's initiative and has introduced a similar bill in the House of Representatives, as per information from the same press release.
Cotton's official website provides further details about his role as a senator from Arkansas. He serves on several committees including Judiciary, Intelligence, and Armed Services Committees, while also holding positions such as ranking member for the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice and Counterterrorism.
