Border Patrol agents at Puerto Rico's Ramey Station recently thwarted a cocaine smuggling attempt involving 395 pounds of the narcotic. The estimated value of the seized drugs was $4.4 million, and they were being transported in a boat near the coastal city of Rincon.

Desi D. DeLeon, chief patrol agent for Ramey Sector, praised the efforts of his team. "The vigilant and dedicated efforts of our Border Patrol Agents resulted in the successful interception and their unwavering commitment to securing our borders and protecting our communities continues to be a formidable force against illicit activities," said DeLeon. "This significant operation underscores the relentless pursuit of justice and safety by our law enforcement, sending a clear message that illegal activities will not go unchecked on our watch."

According to a news release from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), agents from Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces for Rapid Action (FURA) discovered the boat on Feb. 20. They escorted the captain to the Black Eagle boat ramp before calling Ramey Border Patrol station for assistance.

In collaboration with law enforcement personnel from Homeland Security Investigations, Drug Enforcement Administration, Puerto Rico Police, and CBP Air and Marine Operations, Border Patrol agents discovered 157 bundles of cocaine as per the news release. A U.S. citizen involved in this operation along with the narcotics and associated transportation devices were handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further legal proceedings.

The news release further informs that Ramey Sector is unique as it is the only Border Patrol sector located outside mainland United States. It covers U.S. territorial islands including Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands. Agents operating in this sector are responsible for monitoring a 12-mile band of territorial water surrounding these islands along with approximately 6,000 square miles of land and water area.
