The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a new office aimed at guiding rural and agricultural communities towards economic opportunities. The initiative is designed to enhance the vitality of these communities and small towns, while also bolstering environmental stewardship.

According to an EPA news release, Rod Snyder will helm the newly established Office of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Snyder has served as the EPA’s senior advisor for agriculture since October 2021. His responsibilities will increase in his new position as he strives to boost expertise among agriculture managers operating across all ten EPA regional offices throughout the country.

"Farmers and ranchers are crucial partners as we work together to deliver clean air, clear water, and climate solutions, all while playing the critical role of ensuring an abundant fiber, fuel and food supply," said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. "With the launch of this new office, we are ensuring agricultural and rural stakeholders will continue to have a seat at the table for many years to come."

Regan announced the creation of this new office during America's largest farmer-led convention, the 2024 Commodity Classic in Houston, Texas. As stated in the news release, this marked the first time an EPA Administrator attended this event in its history. The Office of Agriculture and Rural Affairs plans to rely on science-led solutions to advocate for a dynamic agricultural system while safeguarding the environment alongside the EPA.

As per the news release, collaboration with other agencies is also part of the new office's mandate. It will work closely with entities such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, state departments of agriculture and underserved towns seeking to upgrade infrastructure through federal investments. The existing Farm, Ranch and Rural Communities Federal Advisory Committee (FRRCC) within EPA will operate under this newly created office.
