U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) stated that billions of dollars in taxpayer funds are being directed to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), which he accuses of facilitating "illegal immigration." Tiffany has urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate whether these NGOs have violated federal law.
"The Biden administration has funneled billions of tax dollars to these NGOs, who use that money to provide 'free' travel, housing, meals, health care, and other benefits to illegal aliens," said Tiffany. "It's long past time for American taxpayers to stop financing these activities, and for the Justice Department to investigate whether these groups are violating federal laws against aiding and abetting illegal immigration."
According to Fox News, two House Republicans, Tiffany and U.S. Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas), requested the DOJ probe the American Red Cross, following reports that it had been distributing "how-to" manuals containing maps and guides instructing migrants on safe travel across the U.S. southern border. The lawmakers allege that many such NGOs, including the Red Cross, may have breached federal law by aiding and abetting illegal immigrants under the pretext of humanitarian efforts.
Gooden introduced the "Protecting Federal Funds from Human Trafficking and Smuggling Act" in May 2023, co-sponsored by Tiffany among other House Republicans. This legislation seeks to prevent federal funds from inadvertently supporting human trafficking or smuggling activities. The act mandates federal agencies to establish procedures and safeguards ensuring that government-provided funds are not used by individuals or organizations involved in human trafficking or smuggling.
In a post on X, Tiffany said he was traveling through Tucson airport when an illegal immigrant handed him a paper flyer, provided by the NGO Casa Alitas, outlining the migrant's travel schedule with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the final destination.
Tiffany's House biography reveals that he was elected to Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District in a special election held in May 2020. A native of northern Wisconsin, Tiffany represented this region in the state legislature for nine years before his election to Congress.
