The Biden-Harris administration announced the release of the National-Zero Emission Freight Corridor Strategy. The strategy, according to U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, will alter freight transportation while it assists American communities and preserves the environment.

In partnership with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation and the Department of Energy (DOE) developed the strategy, which will direct the installation of hydrogen fueling stations and zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (ZE-MHDV) charging infrastructure across the country.

The strategy aims to meet market demands by directing public investment to boost private sector progress, streamline utility and regulatory energy planning, and improve air quality in communities impacted by diesel emissions. Additionally, it introduces the National EV Freight Corridors designation by the Federal Highway Administration, aligning with the National Highway Freight Network. According to a press release by DOE, through four phases, this strategy will advance infrastructure development across critical freight corridors and hubs. It will link hubs based on freight volumes, expand corridor connections, and achieve a national network for widespread access.

"For over a century, petroleum-fueled freight has transported vital food and resources to American families but at the same time, these vehicles have also contributed to lower public health, especially in densely populated communities," Granholm said in the release. "The Biden-Harris Administration is addressing this issue head-on with innovative strategies to transform freight so it not only supports American families and businesses but also protects the environment for future generations."

The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation stands as a cornerstone in zero-emission transportation infrastructure. It fosters synergy between the DOE and DOT, while aiming to drive forward zero-emission transportation infrastructure initiatives. According to information provided on its About webpage, The Joint Office plays a role in spearheading advancements in zero-emission transportation infrastructure endeavors.
