The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced an allocation of up to $22 million aimed at enhancing processes related to the planning, siting, and permitting of large-scale renewable energy facilities. The Renewable Energy Siting through Technical Engagement and Planning (R-STEP) program is designed to assist local governments and communities in planning for large-scale renewable energy projects, with a second round of funding in the pipeline.

According to a DOE press release, six state-based projects have been granted funding through the R-STEP program. This initiative is financed by the DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office and Wind Energy Technologies Office, and managed by ENERGYWERX. Spearheaded by institutions and agencies in Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Wisconsin, these initiatives are geared towards aiding communities in their planning for large-scale renewable energy projects.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm stated: "Solar and wind energy and battery storage are on the rise throughout America. This year, we expect these to make up a record-breaking 94% of our nation’s new electric-generating capabilities." She further added that "Often, the biggest barrier to deploying that clean generation is siting and permitting. The Biden-Harris Administration is helping provide local leaders with the resources needed to deploy more clean energy to their residents in a way that is tailored to their unique needs."

Each project will offer resources such as educational materials, technical assistance, and facilitation services to local governments and communities. This approach aims at fostering informed decision-making and sustainable development. In addition to this effort, Granholm revealed that DOE plans a second round of funding amounting to $12 million from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.

As per the ENERGYWERX webpage, this organization facilitates collaboration between DOE and various stakeholders with the aim of advancing the development and deployment of clean energy solutions. By leveraging proven methodologies, ENERGYWERX aims to accelerate the commercialization and deployment of energy technologies. Its ultimate goal is to strengthen national security ecosystems and enhance energy security.
