WASHINGTON – The National Retail Federation today announced the 2024 Top 50 Global Retailers, a list compiled by Kantar based on the operational performance of international retailers at the beginning of 2023. NRF Executive Director of Research Mark Mathews expressed, "In our increasingly interconnected global economy, retailers are continually expanding their international customer base." He added, "It is exciting to see the tremendous breadth and diversity of businesses that are featured in this year's Global Top 50."
Maintaining its position as the world's largest retailer, Walmart topped the list with a strong online marketplace and a variety of new financial resources for shoppers. The retailer's Walmart+ media platform also continued to expand globally. The Top 10 retailers from 2023 retained their positions in 2024, with Amazon in second place, followed by Schwarz Group, Aldi, Costco, Ahold Delhaize, and Carrefour.
Kantar Senior Vice President of Global Insights and Technology David Marcotte noted, "For most companies in this ranking, retail sales and profits grew even as shoppers changed their work and personal routines and the channels they shopped." He emphasized, "Shoppers in 2023 repeatedly said they needed more convenience from retailers, and the brands that focused on convenience were successful."
Kantar's ranking system evaluates retailers based on their domestic and international retail revenues, requiring a direct investment in at least three countries to qualify for the list.
