The United States and the United Kingdom have embarked on a collaborative venture focusing on the Science of AI Safety. This partnership will see the two nations' Safety Institutes joining forces to conduct research, safety evaluations, and provide guidance for AI safety within their respective countries.
UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Michelle Donelan, expressed her enthusiasm about this agreement. "This agreement represents a landmark moment, as the UK and the United States deepen our enduring special relationship to address the defining technology challenge of our generation," she said. Donelan further emphasized that ensuring safe development of AI is a global concern. "Only by working together can we address the technology’s risks head on and harness its enormous potential to help us all live easier and healthier lives. The work of our two nations in driving forward AI safety will strengthen the foundations we laid at Bletchley Park in November, and I have no doubt that our shared expertise will continue to pave the way for countries tapping into AI’s enormous benefits safely and responsibly."
According to a press release issued by the Department of Commerce, this partnership is set to commence immediately with an expectation that both organizations work in unison. As AI continues to develop rapidly, both governments acknowledge the importance of researching and enforcing AI safety measures. They anticipate that risks associated with AI will increase as technology advances. To mitigate these risks, they plan to employ information sharing, close cooperation, and expert personnel exchanges through this partnership.
In February, according to a press release by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Biden-Harris Administration announced its first consortium dedicated solely to AI Safety. This consortium includes over 200 leading stakeholders in AI and supports the U.S. AI Safety Institute.
