On April 9, 2024, the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives with overwhelming bipartisan support. The legislation aims to expand outdoor recreation opportunities across America, with a focus on improving access to public lands and waters.

Chairman Bruce Westerman, a Republican from Arkansas and an avid outdoorsman, expressed his pride in championing the EXPLORE Act, highlighting its potential to modernize visitor experiences, increase accessibility for veterans and service members, create new opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, and support small businesses and gateway communities that rely on public land access. Westerman also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of members from both parties in advancing the bill through the House and looks forward to its progression in the Senate.

Ranking Member Raúl Grijalva, a Democrat from Arizona, emphasized the importance of ensuring that all Americans have access to recreational opportunities on public lands. He praised the EXPLORE Act for its provisions to promote accessibility for individuals with disabilities, enhance job opportunities for veterans, and address disparities in outdoor access in underserved urban communities. Grijalva emphasized the need to continue supporting conservation efforts and investing in land management agencies to sustainably manage public lands for future generations.

The EXPLORE Act, supported by over 100 outdoor organizations, aims to improve access to public lands and waters, modernize visitor experiences through technology enhancements, streamline permitting processes, protect rock climbing areas, create new bike trails, restore campgrounds, and enhance accessibility for various groups, including military service members, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and children.

The bipartisan passage of the EXPLORE Act signals a significant step towards expanding outdoor recreation opportunities and ensuring that America's public lands are accessible to all.
