The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) has expressed concerns following the European Parliament's plenary vote on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Procedural Regulation. ITI's Policy Manager for Europe, Laura Wiesenfeld, highlighted the potential consequences of the vote on GDPR enforcement mechanisms, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach.
Wiesenfeld stated, "Unfortunately, today’s vote threatens the viability of the GDPR’s essential One-Stop-Shop mechanism, reduces confidentiality protections, restricts rights of investigated parties, and turns the enforcement process into an adversarial one." She stressed the importance of ensuring efficiency and effectiveness across Europe by advocating for a more balanced enforcement approach.
ITI has called on the EU Council to collaborate with industry stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of GDPR enforcement. The tech trade association has urged lawmakers to preserve confidentiality, uphold the One Stop Shop mechanism, protect the rights of investigated parties, prevent an adversarial enforcement process, and promote early resolution and cooperation in cross-border data protection cases.
In light of the recent developments, ITI emphasizes the importance of working together to ensure that the GDPR can enhance data protection practices in the years to come. By encouraging a balanced and practical approach to enforcement, ITI aims to support the efficient functioning of GDPR regulations across Europe.
