Event Advisory: Screening of ‘Columbine 2024: 25 Years of Trauma’ in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress' Reel Progress program is hosting a screening of the documentary "Columbine 2024: 25 Years of Trauma," which follows the journey of Columbine teacher Kiki Leyba and his wife, Kallie Leyba, as they navigate the enduring aftermath of the Columbine tragedy. "By exploring the individual experiences of Kiki and Kallie, viewers gain a complex understanding of how trauma shapes lives over time," said the announcement.

The film aims to honor the memory of those affected by the Columbine shooting while shedding light on the ongoing struggle for healing and recovery. According to the announcement, "‘Columbine 2024: 25 Years of Tragedy’ serves as a moving reminder of the enduring impact of mass violence on communities and individuals." It highlights the resilience of the human spirit in the face of profound adversity and offers hope for healing and reconciliation in the wake of tragedy.

The screening will be followed by a discussion on the long-lasting impact of gun violence and advocacy for prevention. The panel will feature Jeff Vespa, director of the documentary, as well as Kiki Leyba, first-year teacher at Columbine High School in 1999, Kallie Leyba, executive director of American Federation of Teachers Colorado, and Tom Mauser, activist and father of a victim of the Columbine High School massacre.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET at 1333 H St. NW, Washington, D.C. Identification will be required for entry, and a light dinner will be provided.
