The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the approval of New York's funding application for the Home Energy Rebates under President Biden's Investing in America agenda. New York has been awarded an initial $158 million to implement its rebate program aimed at helping families save money on energy-efficient electric appliances. This marks the first state to receive funding under this program, which is part of an effort to lower home energy costs, address the climate crisis, and promote a clean energy economy.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm highlighted the purpose of the Home Energy Rebate programs, stating, "Save energy and save money—that's exactly what the Home Energy Rebate programs are designed to do." The initiative aims to provide consumers with the opportunity to upgrade their homes with energy-efficient appliances and tools to reduce monthly utility costs.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul expressed gratitude for the funding, emphasizing the state's commitment to transitioning to affordable and efficient homes. Governor Hochul thanked President Biden, Secretary Granholm, and the New York Congressional Delegation for their support in leading the state towards a clean energy future.
Various states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, and others, have also applied for funding under the Home Energy Rebate programs. These programs, funded with a total of $8.8 billion, aim to lower energy costs, enhance efficiency, and create job opportunities in sectors such as residential construction and manufacturing.
Senator Charles E. Schumer praised the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program, stating, "This $158 million in federal funding will help low-income New Yorkers save on energy bills and reduce pollution by replacing dirty, inefficient appliances with modern cost-saving energy units." Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also commended the initiative, highlighting the benefits it brings to working-class families and the environment.
The DOE's Rebates Dashboard allows for tracking the progress of each state in implementing the rebate programs, which include the Home Efficiency Rebates Program and the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates Program. These initiatives aim to reduce upfront costs for energy-efficient upgrades in homes and promote the use of efficient electric technologies.
As states prepare to launch their programs, DOE is conducting outreach to various stakeholders to ensure the success of the rebate programs. Efforts include engaging with contractors, labor unions, retailers, and manufacturers to raise awareness and facilitate participation in the programs.
DOE is currently reviewing states' applications to ensure compliance with guidelines, with plans to approve funding and launch programs in the near future. The initiative aims to help households save up to $14,000 on home upgrades, with a focus on benefiting low-income households and promoting consumer protection.
The Home Energy Rebates program is part of President Biden's broader Investing in America agenda, offering homeowners opportunities to save energy and money through clean energy upgrades. Resources such as home energy audits and tax credits for clean energy upgrades are available to help homeowners maximize savings and improve energy efficiency.
