In a recent bilingual roundtable event hosted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Puerto Rico, over 150 stakeholders gathered to learn about the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP) and other federal funding sources aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and climate resilience in affordable housing.

During the event, HUD officials shared insights on the GRRP and various funding opportunities available under the Inflation Reduction Act to support upgrades and renovations for properties to withstand extreme weather events caused by climate change. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Multifamily Housing Programs, Ethan Handelman, expressed the program's commitment to creating safer and healthier homes for low-income residents nationwide.

Established as part of President Biden's Investing in America Agenda, the GRRP has already allocated $544 million towards projects in 36 states and the District of Columbia, benefitting over 12,500 homes. These projects range from targeted upgrades to major net-zero renovations, showcasing a significant investment in energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, and climate resilience.

The GRRP represents a crucial step towards creating more resilient communities and improving the quality of housing for families in need. The program focuses on investing in energy-efficient measures such as insulation, hurricane-resistance retrofits, renewable energy generation, and more, aligning with the Administration's Justice40 Initiative.

Furthermore, the GRRP offers different funding options for property owners, including Elements, Leading Edge, and Comprehensive funds, tailored to support a variety of retrofit activities based on climate resilience and utility efficiency needs.

Overall, the HUD roundtable event in Puerto Rico shed light on the impactful work being done through the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program, emphasizing the importance of creating sustainable and resilient housing solutions for communities across the nation.
