The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) marked this Earth Day by celebrating its commitment to climate leadership and the 25th anniversary of its Climate Change Center. The Center leads policy, research, and action to address the nation’s challenges regarding climate change and transportation.

In the past year, USDOT has made significant strides in various climate initiatives. Among them, the Department awarded $830 million in grants to enhance transportation system resilience to climate impacts. This funding complements the $7.3 billion already allocated to support climate resilience efforts.

Furthermore, nearly 240 transit agencies have been recognized for their innovative approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through initiatives like the Sustainable Transit for a Healthy Planet Climate Challenge. This program encourages transit leaders to prioritize investments that combat the climate crisis.

In line with its commitment to climate action, USDOT will convene a Climate and Transportation Symposium this summer, bringing together climate champions from cities, states, and communities nationwide to showcase solutions for the transportation sector.

Additionally, USDOT and the Biden-Harris Administration have allocated $17.6 million to support the development of affordable housing near transit, making transportation more accessible and reducing costs for families. The Department also initiated the construction of Brightline West, a high-speed, zero-emission rail project that will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and create job opportunities.

Moreover, USDOT announced $3.3 billion in grant awards for 132 communities through the Reconnecting Communities & Neighborhoods (RCN) Grant Program. This initiative aims to enhance community connectivity and address environmental concerns caused by transportation facilities.
