Department of State Coordinator for Counterterrorism Ambassador Elizabeth Richard is set to travel to Ankara, Türkiye on April 22 for the U.S.-Türkiye Counterterrorism Consultation. The visit comes after the relaunch of counterterrorism consultations between the United States and Türkiye at the Strategic Mechanism meetings in Washington D.C. in March 2024.
During the consultation, Ambassador Richard and Turkish government counterparts will focus on broadening and strengthening U.S.-Türkiye counterterrorism cooperation. This includes efforts to thwart terrorist travel, combat terrorism-related networks involved in organized crime, ensure the defeat of terrorist organizations like PKK, DHKP-C, and ISIS in Syria and Iraq, as well as cooperate to counter the threat of ISIS and al-Qa’ida affiliates in Africa and South and Central Asia.
Ambassador Richard will also discuss ways to combat the exploitation of global finance channels by terrorist organizations with Turkish officials. The meeting aims to enhance collaboration between the two countries in the fight against terrorism and to address various security challenges.
The U.S. Embassy in Türkiye stated that the discussions during the consultation are crucial in advancing mutual interests in counterterrorism efforts. Ambassador Richard's visit underscores the commitment of both the United States and Türkiye to work together in combating terrorism on a global scale.
