U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Iranian Cyber Actors

The United States has announced the imposition of sanctions on Iranian entities and individuals involved in malicious cyber activities. Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the sanctions target two Iranian companies and four individuals connected to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Cyber Electronic Command (IRGC-CEC), a U.S.-designated entity.

Miller highlighted that these actors have engaged in cyber operations targeting more than a dozen U.S. companies and government entities. He further emphasized, "The United States will continue to expose malicious cyber actors and use the tools at our disposal to promote accountability. The United States will not tolerate malicious cyber activities victimizing U.S. companies."

The Department of the Treasury's actions were coordinated with the unsealing of an indictment by the Department of Justice against the four individuals for their roles in cyber activities aimed at U.S. entities. Miller pointed out that the IRGC-CEC, operating through front companies, has been actively involved in malicious cyber activities not only against the U.S. but also several other countries.

The sanctions imposed by the Department of the Treasury were carried out under Executive Order 13224, targeting malicious cyber activities linked to the IRGC CEC, a designated terrorist organization. For more details on the sanctions and related actions, the public is directed to refer to the Treasury’s press release.
