DALLAS, TEXAS (April 25, 2024) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded a $425,616 grant to the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation (CELF) to support their efforts in promoting environmental justice and sustainability in the Greater Houston area. The grant will fund a project aimed at cultivating a new generation of environmental advocates equipped with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) skills to address local environmental challenges through school-community collaboration.

Regional Administrator Dr. Earthea Nance expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Science, technology, engineering, arts, and math have always been the core of student education, and with this funding we will see students use these skills to develop innovative climate resilience strategies in collaboration with their communities.”

Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia also praised the grant, highlighting its impact on low-income areas in her district, saying, “These federal funds are going to have a lasting impact on the students and teachers in low-income areas in my district.”

Tara Ocansey, Executive Director of the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation, emphasized the importance of EPA support in advancing environmental initiatives, stating, “Having the support of the EPA in advancing this important work is key to demonstrating that the U.S. is serious about pursuing a clean and healthy environment for all of us.”

The project will involve collaboration with various organizations, including Rice University and the Galveston Bay Foundation, to engage students in environmental education and data collection. Carolyn Nichol, Director of the Rice Office of STEM Engagement, expressed gratitude for the support from the EPA, emphasizing the project's alignment with their mission.

Cindy Wilems, Director of Education at the Galveston Bay Foundation, highlighted the foundation's commitment to environmental education and its correlation with the goals of the project, stating, “This project directly correlates with our education goals to instill knowledge and appreciation of the Galveston Bay ecosystem.”

The initiative by the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation aims to empower students in economically disadvantaged communities to become advocates for environmental justice and climate resilience. By engaging with multiple school districts and community partners, the project seeks to address environmental challenges in the Greater Houston area.

The grant reflects President Biden’s commitment to environmental justice and climate action, with EPA Region 6 directing significant funding towards high-risk communities to support environmental practices and climate resilience.

Overall, the grant awarded to the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation signifies a step towards fostering environmental awareness and sustainability among the youth of Houston, empowering them to be leaders in creating a more resilient and just future for their communities.
