HUD Prioritizes Resilient, Efficient, and Green Homes and Community Development

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is making significant strides in prioritizing resilient, efficient, and green homes and community development under the Biden-Harris Administration.

HUD's commitment to improving the lives of families and communities by reducing energy and insurance costs while enhancing resilience has led to various initiatives and partnerships aimed at combating climate change and advancing environmental justice.

Efforts to enhance climate resilience in vulnerable communities have been highlighted, with HUD establishing internal working groups, publishing guides, and launching resources to address extreme heat, disaster recovery, and transportation resilience. The agency has also collaborated with partners like FEMA, tribal communities, and federal agencies to promote climate resilience and adaptation.

HUD's focus on energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction has resulted in the adoption of updated Minimum Energy Standards, significant funding allocations for green and resilient retrofit programs, and initiatives to provide data on energy consumption for multifamily properties to drive efficiency improvements.

Furthermore, HUD's commitment to environmental justice is evident in its actions to address housing discrimination, lead exposure, radon protection, and collaboration with agencies like EPA and HHS to safeguard communities from health hazards.

The agency's dedication to internal training and learning opportunities for staff underscores its commitment to addressing climate change and environmental justice issues effectively.

HUD's holistic approach to building interagency partnerships, investing in energy efficiency, promoting climate resilience, and advancing environmental justice is a testament to its efforts to create a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

As Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman emphasized, "HUD is continuing to host conversations and engage in initiatives that align with our mission to advance a climate-resilient nation and protect the environment for future generations."
