The Department of Defense has unveiled the Calendar Year 2022 Annual Report on Civilian Casualties in Connection with United States Military Operations. According to the report, no civilian casualties were caused by U.S. military operations in 2022.
In compliance with Section 1057 of the FY18 National Defense Appropriations Act, the Department is mandated to produce an annual report on civilian casualties related to U.S. military operations. The report details each U.S.-caused civilian casualty incident, including date, location, operation type (air or ground), and the number of civilians affected. It also outlines the procedures for assessing allegations of civilian casualties, ex gratia payments, and measures taken by the U.S. to minimize civilian harm.
As stated in the report, there were no civilian casualties resulting from U.S. military operations in 2022. However, the report does update the figures for civilian casualties from 2017-2021, with a total of 18 civilians killed and 11 civilians injured during that period based on post-assessment allegations.
The CY2022 Annual Report on Civilian Casualties in Connection with U.S. Military Operations is available for public access. Additionally, detailed information on the Department's Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response efforts can be accessed for further insight.
