The U.S. Department of Education has revealed the recipients of the 2024 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools, District Sustainability Awardees, and Postsecondary Sustainability Awardees. A total of 41 schools, 10 districts, three postsecondary institutions, and one early learning center from across the nation have been recognized for their exceptional efforts in reducing environmental impact, improving health and wellness, and providing effective sustainability education.
According to U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, "This year’s U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools are leading school transformation in states that will help ensure all students in all communities have the opportunity to grow to become strong and healthy learners." He further emphasized, "These awards represent thousands of students, and countless hours of hard work in schools and on college campuses, ensuring equitable access to healthy, climate-resilient learning environments where students are prepared for the sustainability challenges of the present and future."
Among the distinguished awardees is George Garcia of the California Department of Education, who has been honored with the Director's Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of education.
The announcement coincides with the White House's inaugural Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K-12 School Buildings and Grounds, which underscores the Biden-Harris Administration's dedication to providing equitable access to energy-efficient, climate-resilient, and healthy school facilities conducive to learning and well-being. The summit aims to address the critical need for sustainable, 21st-century school infrastructure and its impact on student health, well-being, and academic outcomes.
In addition to the awards, the Department of Education has launched a new publication series, ED Infrastructure and Sustainability Notes, which highlights key sustainability concepts and practices in schools nationwide.
