The 20th annual State Department Model United Nations (UN) conference is set to convene on April 29 at the Department of State, featuring a keynote address from Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Elizabeth M. Allen. Over the past two decades, this event has welcomed more than 500 students annually from Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, providing them with a platform to engage in representing UN member states and discussing crucial global issues.
Reflecting on the significance of the Model UN conference, the organizers emphasized, "We believe the young people who participate in Model UN are tomorrow’s leaders." They highlighted how many current government officials, both in the U.S. and internationally, honed essential skills through their participation in Model UN, such as writing, research, public speaking, negotiation, and advocacy.
The event aims to offer students a practical opportunity to delve into topics such as human rights, food security, climate change, economic development, and peace and security. By engaging in these discussions and simulations, participants have the chance to nurture their diplomatic and leadership potential.
In a statement, the organizers commended the enthusiasm and drive of the students, recognizing their potential to shape the future of diplomacy, stating, "We applaud the interest and initiative of these students, who have the potential to become tomorrow’s diplomats."
