CCIA Voices Concerns Over Commerce Department's Security Proposal

Washington – The Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) has voiced its concerns regarding a proposed rulemaking by the Commerce Department aimed at addressing cyber and security threats. In its filing, CCIA expressed reservations about the effectiveness of the proposed Customer Identification Program (CIP).

CCIA urged the Commerce Department to reconsider its approach, highlighting that the NPRM could potentially hinder the private sector's efforts to prevent and combat the misuse of their services. According to CCIA, the proposed requirements could prove to be costly and limiting.

Additionally, CCIA, in collaboration with the Information Technology Industry Council, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and other entities, submitted a joint letter to the Commerce Department. The letter called for a separate handling of AI-enabled threats and emphasized the need to prioritize the Abuse of IaaS Products Deterrence Program (ADP) over the Customer Identification Program.

The joint effort by CCIA and other industry stakeholders underscores the importance of a strategic and effective approach to cybersecurity and threat mitigation.
