Senior government officials from various countries gathered in Washington, DC for the third Senior Officials Meeting of the Resettlement Diplomacy Network (RDN). Assistant Secretary Julieta Valls Noyes led the meeting, which aimed to assess the impact of the RDN's work and prioritize collective action on refugee resettlement and complementary pathways.
During the meeting, participants discussed the use of the Emergency Coordination Platform within the RDN, known as the "Red Phone" mechanism, to collaborate on situations of shared concern, such as providing safety to Afghan refugees. They also explored ways to strengthen the global resettlement and complementary protection pathways system, including enhancing emergency transit infrastructure and utilizing innovative refugee resettlement referral mechanisms.
One of the key topics of discussion was the Safe Mobility initiative, with a focus on coordinating infrastructure to support pathways to resettlement. The meeting highlighted the importance of working together to address large-scale displacement and leverage community-driven sponsorship models for refugee protection.
The Resettlement Diplomacy Network was launched by the United States in September 2022, with support from Pathways International and the Migration Policy Institute. The RDN continues to play a crucial role in facilitating international cooperation and strengthening the global protection system for refugees.
