U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra emphasized the importance of mental health in a statement released for World Mental Health Awareness Month 2024. He stated, “Mental health is an essential component of overall wellbeing, yet it is often overlooked or misunderstood. Many individuals and communities are experiencing increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Now, more than ever, we need accessible mental health resources and support systems for all because mental health is health. Period."
Secretary Becerra highlighted the Department of Health and Human Services' commitment to providing support through initiatives like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which has responded to over nine million calls, texts, and chat messages. He encouraged individuals to seek help without hesitation, stating, “If you're struggling, don't wait. Reach out to a therapist, counselor, or support group. Make that phone call, schedule that appointment, and if you’re wondering what support is right for you, visit FindSupport.gov."
In a separate statement, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Deputy Secretary Andrea Palm also addressed the significance of Mental Health Awareness Month 2024. Palm acknowledged the impact of mental health on individuals, families, and communities, stating, “During Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s crucial to reflect on the profound impact of mental health on individuals, families, and communities."
Deputy Secretary Palm highlighted the department's commitment to transforming behavioral health and integrating it into communities. She mentioned the release of the 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and Federal Action Plan as a milestone in their efforts to support mental wellness. Palm emphasized the importance of providing immediate support to those in need through initiatives like the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
As World Mental Health Awareness Month is commemorated, both Secretary Becerra and Deputy Secretary Palm urged individuals to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. They emphasized that support is available and that no one should feel alone in their struggles.
