The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a significant investment of $28,650,000 from President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda to aid Kansas in identifying and replacing lead service lines, with the goal of preventing exposure to lead in drinking water. This initiative is part of President Biden's commitment to replace every lead pipe in the nation, ultimately protecting public health and ensuring safe drinking water for all.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan emphasized the urgency of addressing lead pipes, stating, "The science is clear, there is no safe level of lead exposure, and the primary source of harmful exposure in drinking water is through lead pipes." He highlighted President Biden's dedication to securing resources for states to swiftly remove these hazardous pipes.

EPA Region 7 Administrator Meghan A. McCollister also stressed the importance of the funding, particularly for the health of young children, noting that "This historic funding to replace lead service lines is a significant step toward a healthier tomorrow for our Heartland communities and future generations."

Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Janet Stanek expressed gratitude for the investment, stating, "This investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law gives Kansas the resources it needs to continue replacing water infrastructure that ultimately ensures safe drinking water, which is essential for the health and safety of all Kansans."

Additionally, U.S. Representative Sharice Davids (KS-03) highlighted the critical role of water infrastructure in communities, stating, "People don't always realize how important those systems are until they fail – but it's our responsibility to ensure they never get to that point." She welcomed the investments from the bipartisan infrastructure bill, emphasizing the importance of delivering cleaner drinking water to communities.

The funding provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is part of a larger effort to replace lead service lines nationwide. EPA projects that up to 1.7 million lead pipes will be replaced through this program, benefiting numerous families by securing clean drinking water.

This investment is a significant step towards achieving environmental justice and ensuring that disadvantaged communities, particularly communities of color and low-income families, are prioritized in receiving clean and safe drinking water. With a focus on reducing lead exposure and improving public health, the initiative aligns with President Biden's commitment to advancing environmental justice and infrastructure development across the country.
