(Hengyang, Hunan Province – May 1, 2024) The case of Chen Wensheng, who was charged with “organizing and funding illegal gatherings,” was tried in the Hengyang City Shigu District People’s Court on the morning of April 18, 2024. Chen Wensheng, a prominent figure known for his street evangelism, has been at the center of a legal battle that has garnered significant attention. His trial, however, was not without controversy as authorities took stringent measures that obstructed the attendance of his relatives and supporters.
Chen Wensheng's arrest in September of the previous year marked the beginning of a tumultuous period for the activist. After being held in custody for seven and a half months, he faced the courtroom where he was prosecuted under Article 290 of the Criminal Law. The procuratorate recommended a sentence of less than three years with severe punishment, but no sentence was immediately announced during the trial. Despite the uncertainty of the outcome, Chen Wensheng remained resolute, declaring his intention to appeal regardless of the verdict.
During the trial proceedings on April 18, security measures were visibly heightened. Chen Wensheng's supporters were met with resistance by black-clad security guards who prevented them from entering the court premises. The limited seating available in the public gallery further exacerbated the situation, with only a select few, including Chen Wensheng’s immediate family members, granted access. Reports indicated that individuals of unknown origin occupied the remaining seats, while some of Chen Wensheng’s relatives, like his second brother and elderly mother, were unable to attend due to restrictions imposed by authorities.
The scene outside the court was described as tense, with a significant presence of law enforcement officials and security personnel. Concerned Christians who sought to show their support for Chen Wensheng were met with resistance, as they were pushed away by police officers. Despite facing obstacles, the group displayed patience and composure in the face of adversity. The heavy security deployment and efforts to deter individuals from attending the trial underscored the high level of alert surrounding the proceedings.
As the trial of Chen Wensheng continues to unfold, the obstacles faced by his relatives and supporters highlight the challenges in seeking transparency and public access to legal proceedings in cases involving individuals deemed as dissenting voices.
