Washington, D.C. — Today, the Biden administration announced a new federal rule granting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients eligibility for Affordable Care Act marketplace coverage and financial assistance for the first time, a change expected to lead to 100,000 DACA recipients enrolling in federal marketplace coverage.
In response to this development, Rosa Barrientos-Ferrer, senior policy analyst for Immigration Policy at the Center for American Progress, emphasized the significance of the new rule, stating, "The Biden administration’s rule expanding health coverage to DACA recipients will be life-changing for so many Dreamers who cannot access basic medical care. More than one-third of DACA recipients currently do not have health insurance. This rule is yet another example of the administration’s commitment to lowering the cost of living and expanding health coverage. It admirably advances the principle that health care is a right and not a privilege."
The decision to extend ACA marketplace health coverage to DACA recipients is seen as a positive step towards addressing the healthcare needs of this population. The move is aligned with the administration's broader efforts to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for all individuals.
