The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has unveiled around $22.3 million for organizations supporting underserved and veteran farmers and ranchers through the 2501 Program. Administered by USDA’s Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement (OPPE), this initiative aims to help these farmers own and operate successful farms.

"2501 Program partners are based in local communities and rural areas where they serve a critical role in maximizing USDA’s outreach efforts to underserved communities," stated OPPE Director Lisa Ramírez. These partners offer training, technical assistance, and connections to USDA programs for agricultural producers.

Since its inception over 30 years ago, the 2501 Program has collaborated with organizations nationwide to assist underserved farmers and ranchers. The program was expanded in the 2014 Farm Bill to include veteran farmers and ranchers, with further funding increases in the 2018 Farm Bill until fiscal year 2024.

Through the 2501 funding, organizations conduct various activities like education, training, farming demonstrations, and conferences to support farming and agribusiness. To date, the program has awarded 615 grants, totaling over $194 million since 2010.

Applications for the current funding round must be submitted via grants.gov by Friday, July 5, 2024. Interested parties can find more details on the 2501 Program page.

In addition, USDA is calling for qualified individuals to serve as peer reviewers to evaluate 2501 program proposals for fiscal year 2024. Those interested can apply by May 22, 2024, by emailing their resume and qualifications to 2501grants@usda.gov.
