The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has declared a $1.7 million research funding allocation for the establishment of a Climate Change and Transportation Research Center at the University of California, Davis. The newly formed Center for Emissions Reduction, Resiliency, and Climate Equity in Transportation will function in cooperation with DOT to support the DOT Climate Change Center and various other related departmental climate and research programs.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change and improving infrastructure resilience. He stated, “Tackling the climate crisis and making our infrastructure more resilient has never been more urgent. The funding and the new research center we’re announcing today will help develop the solutions we need to reduce carbon pollution from transportation and improve the resiliency of our infrastructure—and help turn those findings into national policy.”
The newly established center aims to advance research and technologies that align with the nation's clean energy goals, expedite decarbonization of the transportation sector, enhance resilience of national transportation infrastructure, and address environmental inequities generated by the transportation system.
Dr. Robert C. Hampshire, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology and Chief Science Officer, believes this investment will stimulate innovation and foster informed transportation decisions nationwide.
The center brings together partner institutions such as California State University Long Beach, Texas Southern University, University of California Riverside, University of Southern California, and the University of Vermont to collaboratively conduct research activities.
