The Biden administration has recently declared new tariffs on a variety of Chinese products, encompassing electric vehicles (EVs), solar technologies, batteries, and critical minerals. This move elicited a response from Ryan Mulholland, senior fellow for international economic policy at the Center for American Progress.
Mulholland stated, "These tariffs are an appropriate and necessary step to combat China’s unfair trade practices and ensure that American workers remain at the forefront of the clean energy transition. In the auto sector, the protection provided by these increased tariffs must not be an excuse for firms to slow their deployment of high-quality and affordable EVs." He further added that domestic manufacturers benefiting from tariff protection should seize this opportunity to enhance their production of EVs, persist in investing in new U.S.-based production, offer better compensation to their employees, and permit workers to join unions freely and fairly.
