The U.S. Department of the Treasury has released the Treasury International Capital (TIC) data for March 2024. The subsequent release, which will report on data for April 2024, is slated for June 18, 2024.

In March, the aggregate total of all net foreign acquisitions of long-term securities, short-term U.S. securities, and banking flows resulted in a net TIC inflow of $102.1 billion. Of this amount, net foreign private inflows were $30.3 billion, and net foreign official inflows were $71.7 billion.

Foreign residents expanded their holdings of long-term U.S. securities in March; their net purchases amounted to $178.4 billion. Net purchases by private foreign investors were $152.2 billion, while those by foreign official institutions were $26.2 billion.

U.S. residents also increased their holdings of long-term foreign securities with net purchases reaching $78.0 billion.

After factoring in adjustments such as estimated foreign portfolio acquisitions of U.S. stocks through stock swaps, overall net foreign purchases of long-term securities are projected to have been $100.5 billion in March.

Foreign residents augmented their holdings of U.S. Treasury bills by $0.6 billion while their holdings of all dollar-denominated short-term U.S. securities and other custody liabilities decreased by $23.7 billion.

Banks’ own net dollar-denominated liabilities to foreign residents saw an increase by $25.3 billion.

The monthly data on holdings of long-term securities provide insight into foreign ownership of U.S. securities but cannot attribute holdings with complete accuracy due to factors such as custodial accounts in third countries or U.S Treasury securities managed by foreign private portfolio managers who invest on behalf of residents from other countries.
