The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a stern warning to automakers over data privacy concerns related to connected cars. The warning came in the form of a blog post, which is usually the result of significant internal discussion and even listening sessions and workshops within the agency, according to John Davisson, director of litigation at the Electronic Privacy Information Center.
Davisson further elaborated on the implications of such posts by stating, “These posts are a warning to industry and to regulated entities … take note, fix your business practices, if they’re not compliant with this,” adding that they are “a way for the FTC to convey this is the way they’re going to approach enforcement.”
In addition to its message to automakers, the FTC also highlighted a case involving data broker InMarket Media. The commission alleged that InMarket Media illegally used sensitive data to organize consumers into advertising audience segments.
