On Wednesday, May 22, Jake Laperruque from the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security during a hearing titled “Advancing Innovation (AI): Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Defend and Secure the Homeland.”
In his testimony, Laperruque outlined key principles for responsible AI use. He used facial recognition as a case study to emphasize the importance of responsible AI deployment. Additionally, he proposed several steps Congress could take to promote effective AI use in national security. These included establishing an independent bipartisan oversight board for AI use in national security contexts and enacting requirements to enhance transparency regarding the use and impact of AI.
