Information Technology Industry Council appoints Sean P. Murphy as EVP of Policy

The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) announced today that Sean P. Murphy will join the global tech trade association in June as Executive Vice President of Policy. Murphy brings over three decades of senior tech policy experience, including global roles in the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

"With deep policy experience in both government and the private sector, Sean is a proven, effective, and trusted leader on global technology issues," said ITI President and CEO Jason Oxman. "Sean’s blend of policy, legal, and advocacy expertise and respected reputation on trade and competitiveness will help craft and build consensus for policies across the globe at this critical moment for industry and our members."

Murphy expressed enthusiasm about his new role: "Technology issues are driving nearly every policy conversation across the globe. I’m thrilled to join the talented team at ITI and work with the world’s most innovative companies to navigate the complex digital policy landscape."

In his new position, Murphy will lead ITI’s global policy division, which focuses on developing and advocating for policies, standards, and regulations that promote innovation and growth within the tech industry. His responsibilities include supporting ITI member companies on various issues such as AI, trade, tax, cybersecurity, broadband, privacy, quantum computing, supply chain management, and standards policy. He will also oversee ITI’s global policy teams in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Murphy's career has centered around law and policy intersections with innovative technologies and international business. Previously serving as vice president and counsel at Dolby Laboratories Inc., he led their worldwide government relations team. He has also held positions such as vice president for international government affairs at Qualcomm and international business advisor at Mayer Brown. During the Biden Administration, Murphy was an expert consultant at USTR in the Executive Office of the President. In addition to these roles during his tenure in public service under both Clinton administrations.

Murphy holds a JD from Georgetown University Law Center; an MPhil in international relations from the University of Cambridge; a BA in political science from UC Santa Barbara; membership with the Council on Foreign Relations; participation in World Economic Forum policy groups focusing on technology's future impacts.
