TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) regarding its Plan for Global Engagement on AI Standards. TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore emphasized the importance of U.S. leadership in AI.
“The U.S. must be the global leader in AI investment, research, development, and deployment to ensure it is implemented safely across the world," said Moore. "As hostile nations look to set international AI standards, America must lead in setting the rules of global AI governance, rather than having them dictated to us by others."
Moore also highlighted NIST's crucial role in establishing consistent AI safeguards globally. She stressed that collaboration with international standards organizations is necessary to avoid a fragmented set of rules that could hinder American innovation.
“Any new global AI standards must also be built on consistent scientific practices and evidence, not policy preferences, and remain voluntary," Moore stated. "This will enable continued innovation in AI development, allow for real-time testing of standards, avoid locking in methods that could hinder AI development, and support market competition."
Moore concluded by expressing appreciation for NIST’s efforts in guiding international standards development. “We will continue to work with the Administration to advance America’s leadership in AI and encourage the federal government to remain focused on working with the private sector on AI policy and collaborative scientific research.”
