ATLANTA (June 5, 2024) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), announced today that Rabbit Valley Farmers Market, Inc. in Ringgold, Georgia has been selected to receive technical assistance through the Local Foods, Local Places program. This initiative aims to develop local food systems while promoting sustainability goals.
“EPA is proud to partner with local communities to support local food initiatives that improve access to fresh foods, support and grow new business and protect the environment,” said Acting Region 4 Administrator Jeaneanne Gettle. “As a public health agency, EPA is committed to addressing the problem of food insecurity in the Southeast that can contribute to poor health in our communities.”
Rabbit Valley Farmers Market envisions farmers’ markets as venues not only for purchasing fresh local foods and supporting agriculture but also as community gathering spaces where members can socialize and connect. The market seeks collaboration with various local partners to enhance community awareness about its offerings. Related programs will focus on childhood health, nutrition education, improved food access through SNAP benefits, and environmental education initiatives on composting, water conservation, and community gardening.
“My hope for this project is to create a more community-centered downtown and market, with a collective focus on health, well-being, environmental stewardship, and service to others,” said Samantha Leslie, Executive Director of Rabbit Valley Farmers Market.
This year’s efforts will also involve cooperation between ARC and EPA with the newly established U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Business Center for Appalachia. This center supports underserved farmers and food businesses in overcoming market access barriers within the local food supply chain.
Since its inception in 2014, the Local Foods, Local Places program has assisted 137 communities nationwide. The program helps community groups and governments enhance their capacity to protect the environment and improve public health by providing better access to healthy foods and encouraging active lifestyles. It particularly focuses on sustainable food systems and economic opportunities for local growers and value-added food processors.
