The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a settlement with Andersen’s Sales and Salvage Inc., located at 1490 E 8th St., Greeley, Colorado, regarding alleged violations of the Clean Air Act related to refrigerant releases. The consent agreement and final order require the company to pay a $195,000 penalty for these infractions.
According to the EPA, Andersen’s Sales and Salvage did not verify the proper recovery of all refrigerants from appliances accepted at its scrapyard. These refrigerant compounds can deplete the stratospheric ozone layer, which protects life from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, and also contribute to global warming and climate change. As part of this settlement, the company must comply with an administrative compliance order that includes implementing a refrigerant management plan among other measures.
The facility is situated in an area with environmental justice concerns. Environmental justice involves fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income concerning the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
