The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that its WaterSense program has facilitated significant water savings for consumers and businesses. In 2023 alone, WaterSense labeled products helped save 1.2 trillion gallons of water. Since the inception of the WaterSense label, nearly 8.7 trillion gallons of water have been conserved—equivalent to the annual water usage of all U.S. households.

“By reducing the energy associated with delivering, heating, and treating that water, EPA’s WaterSense program has also reduced a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Dr. Andrew Sawyers, Director of the Office of Wastewater Management at EPA. “We’re proud to have helped American businesses and homes save over a trillion gallons of water in 2023 alone.”

WaterSense is an EPA-sponsored partnership program that serves as both a label for water-efficient products and a resource for promoting water conservation. The initiative aims to protect the nation's future water supply by providing guidance on using less water through efficient products, homes, and services. Products bearing the WaterSense label are independently certified to use 20% less water while maintaining or improving performance standards.

Launched in 2006, WaterSense has more than 45,900 labeled products including toilets, faucets, showerheads, irrigation controllers, and spray sprinkler bodies; additionally, there are over 10,000 WaterSense labeled homes.

More than 2,200 utilities, communities, manufacturers, home builders, retailers, and other organizations have partnered with WaterSense to develop and promote these certified products and homes. The easily recognizable label helps consumers save not only water but also energy and money on utility bills.

Since its launch in 2006, WaterSense labeled products have saved approximately 997 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in the United States—enough to power over 92 million homes for a year—and have eliminated more than 379 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. This reduction is comparable to removing over 90 million cars from roads for a year. Over the past 17 years, consumers have saved $207 billion in water and energy bills by using WaterSense labeled products.

For those seeking plumbing and irrigation products certified for efficiency and performance under this program can search for WaterSense labeled items online. More details can be found in the recently released 2023 WaterSense Accomplishments report.
