U.S. Department of State awards $1.3M in grants for study abroad programs

On June 13, 2024, the U.S. Department of State announced that it has awarded 37 grants totaling nearly $1.3 million to U.S. colleges and universities through the 2024 Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program grant competition.

The IDEAS grants aim to enable higher education institutions to create and expand study abroad programs that align with U.S. foreign policy goals. These programs are designed to provide international experience for American students, helping them develop new knowledge and skills beneficial for their future careers and leadership capacities.

The recipients include public and private colleges and universities across the United States, including ten community colleges and fourteen minority-serving institutions located in 24 states and Washington, D.C.

These grants will support various initiatives such as developing new international partnerships, training faculty and staff, creating resources to engage students in study abroad programs, and developing virtual and hybrid exchanges. The supported programming will extend to 36 destinations worldwide, including Botswana, Croatia, Indonesia, Nepal, Tunisia, and Uruguay.

Two consortium grants were awarded to U.S. institutions collaborating on building study abroad capacity at community colleges to prepare students for careers in STEM fields in support of the bipartisan 2022 CHIPS and Science Act.
