Secretary Antony J. Blinken and Republic of Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos convened at the State Department, marking a significant moment in U.S.-Cyprus relations.
"This is an important moment in the relationship between the United States and Cyprus," Secretary Blinken stated. He announced the initiation of a strategic dialogue between the two nations, with the first session scheduled for this fall in Cyprus. Blinken emphasized that this initiative underscores the strengthening, deepening, and broadening of bilateral ties across various sectors including trade, science and technology, security, education, and people-to-people connections.
Highlighting specific areas of cooperation, Blinken mentioned the maritime corridor in Gaza as a prominent example. He remarked on Cyprus's role as an essential player in regional dynamics and its valued partnership with the United States.
Foreign Minister Kombos expressed gratitude for the invitation and hospitality extended by Secretary Blinken. "In these troubled times, your leadership is critical," Kombos said. He underscored the importance of establishing a structured and intensive dialogue for mutual benefit based on shared values such as democracy, rule of law, opposition to aggression, and revisionism.
Kombos affirmed Cyprus's position as a credible partner for the U.S., especially given its complex regional context. He urged viewing Cyprus as part of solutions to regional issues and highlighted ongoing occupation concerns involving Türkiye. "We count on the support of the United States," he noted.
The meeting concluded with both leaders expressing their commitment to further discussions aimed at enhancing their partnership.
